Adela Reta National Auditorium
Here we are in front of the Dra. Adela Reta National Auditorium, the most important cultural and scenic complex in Uruguay and headquarters of the stable artistic bodies of Sodre. History The land where we are located has a long tradition linked to the arts. The Urquiza Theater originally operated here, expropriated by the State in 1931 to become the Auditorium Studio. For decades it hosted memorable seasons of opera and symphony concerts. However, in 1971 a tragic fire destroyed the main hall, the stage and much of its archives. The reconstruction faced postponements due to the political situation of the time, until in 1985 the then Minister of Education and Culture, Adela Reta, promoted an international architectural competition to design the new building. After several stages of work and international cooperation, the auditorium was officially reopened in November 2009. Present Today is a modern center of more than 25,000 square meters dedicated to artistic creation and dissemination. It houses the Sodre National Ballet (BNS), the Symphony Orchestra, the National Choir and the National Chamber Music Ensemble, attracting more than 300 thousand spectators each year.
