Nelly Goitiño Auditorium

Here we are, in front of the Nelly Goitiño Auditorium, located on Avenida 18 de Julio 930, in the heart of Downtown Montevideo. If you look up, you can appreciate its sober and imposing façade with art deco style lines, testimony to the golden age of the great entertainment halls of the Uruguayan capital. History This building was designed in the late 1940s by architects Rafael Ruano and Julio Pietropinto. It opened its doors in 1949 under the name Cine Eliseo, originally conceived as a space dedicated exclusively to film exhibition, adding to the vibrant billboard of the Montevideo center. In 1967, the SODRE (Official Broadcasting, Radiotelevision and Entertainment Service) acquired the property to use it as a complementary room to its main headquarters. However, in 1971 a ravenous fire destroyed the SODRE Studio Auditorium, which radically changed the destiny of this building: it immediately became the main stage of the official organization for more than three decades, housing its stable bodies, choirs and orchestras.
