Bar El Hacha

Here we are! I present to you Bar El Hacha, the oldest bar in Montevideo, located in the heart of the Guruyú neighborhood, on the historic corner of Buenos Aires and Maciel. History. Its history takes us back to colonial times. Although it is estimated that the original building dates back to around 1730, its commercial activity has been officially registered since January 27, 1817, coinciding with the creation of the department of Montevideo. In its beginnings it functioned as a typical "corner-store" under the ownership of Juan Vázquez, being known by the neighbors of the time as "Vázquez's Corner". As the decades passed and the growth of the port area, the location transformed its profile: it became a beverage office, a general store and, towards the beginning of the 20th century, it functioned as a warehouse, café and bar. During the second half of the last century it was cared for by José "Pepe" Pérez González, a Spanish immigrant who landed in the nearby port and dedicated his life to keeping this corner of Montevideo alive.
