Subway Exhibition Center

We're here! Although it may not seem like it, we are standing right on the Subte Exhibition Center, one of the most unique cultural spots in downtown Montevideo. As you can see with the naked eye, the main feature of this place is its location: we are in the heart of Plaza Fabini, on the busy Avenida 18 de Julio, but the cultural center runs entirely beneath our feet, below street level. History. To understand its origin we must go back to 1936, when the Municipality of Montevideo inaugurated this underground space conceived from the beginning for the exhibition of artistic productions. Throughout its more than eighty years of experience, it has established itself as a fundamental reference for the visual arts of the city. Works by iconic figures of Uruguayan painting and art have passed through its rooms, such as Pedro Figari, José Cúneo, José Gurvich and Manuel Espínola Gómez, serving as a bridge between the different generations of national creators and the public passing by on the avenue. Present Today, the Subway depends on the Arts and Sciences Division of the Department of Culture of Montevideo and is primarily oriented towards the dissemination of contemporary art.
