Montevideo Photography Center
Here we are in front of the headquarters of the Montevideo Photography Center, popularly known as the CdF. We are in the heart of 18 de Julio Avenue in front of a heritage building that combines visual memory, urban history and contemporary art. History. The institution was born in 2002 under the orbit of the Municipality of Montevideo with a specific mission: to safeguard, investigate and enhance the extensive municipal photographic collection, whose documentary records date from the second half of the 19th century to the present day. During its first years it worked in other technical offices, but in July 2015 it moved to this emblematic property: the old Miter Bazaar. This construction, designed in 1932 by engineer Cayetano Carcavallo, was a commercial landmark in the capital for decades. Its structure was restored and conditioned to house modern exhibition rooms, technical conservation laboratories and public consultation spaces, while preserving its original architectural features. Inside this building we have three floors for temporary national and international exhibitions, in addition to the Lilián Hernández Media Library and the CdF Ediciones store, its own publishing label dedicated to photobooks and visual essays.
