Cinematheque We're here! In front of us we have the Uruguayan Cinematheque, a true cultural landmark of Montevideo and a mandatory stopping point for those who want to know the relationship of Uruguayans with art and cinema. History. To understand the importance of this place, we must go back to April 21, 1952. The institution was born at the request of two local film clubs, the Cine Universitario del Uruguay and the Cine Club del Uruguay, with a very clear purpose: to preserve, recover and disseminate the cinematographic heritage. From its early years it was a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) and, over the decades, it consolidated an archive that preserves thousands of local and international films. For most of its history it operated in historic venues scattered throughout the city—such as the emblematic headquarters on Lorenzo Carnelli Street—becoming a key space for cultural encounter and intellectual resistance during the country's most difficult times in the 20th century. Present. Today, the Cinematheque not only preserves the past, but is more alive than ever. In December 2018 he moved to this modern complex where we are located, located in the Old City and integrated into the CAF (Development Bank of Latin America) building.
