Centenario Barracks

Here we are in front of the Centenario Barracks, one of the most emblematic and imposing buildings in the Cordón neighborhood, right in front of the Plaza de los Treinta y Tres. If you look at its structure, you will see that it occupies an entire block delimited by Colonia, Mercedes, Minas and Magallanes streets. History To understand the origin of this building we must go back to the beginning of the 20th century. The Plaza Artola Barracks formerly operated on this same property, which was destroyed after a bombing during the 1898 revolution against the government of Lindolfo Cuestas. Years later, in May 1922, the need to provide the Fire Department with a definitive and modern headquarters arose. At the end of 1924, the Executive Branch approved the plans designed by colonel and architect Alfredo Campos, assigning an initial budget of 300,000 pesos to begin the works. The construction took several years and the building was formally inaugurated on July 18, 1930. Its name, "Centenario", precisely commemorates the hundred years of the Oath of the Constitution of Uruguay, which occurred in 1830. Present Today, the building is still fully active and fulfills the function for which it was conceived.
