Contemporary Art Space

The Contemporary Art Space is a public cultural institution in Uruguay dedicated to contemporary art. Its work focuses on the creation, exhibition and analysis of current artistic practices, as well as research and critical reflection around them. It is the only national public institution dedicated exclusively to contemporary art and is characterized by promoting artistic production through interdisciplinary approaches, integrating contributions from fields such as science and technology. History The Contemporary Art Space was inaugurated in July 2010. Its opening marked the transformation of the old Miguelete prison, a heritage building from the late 19th century located in Montevideo, into a cultural space dedicated to the creation, exhibition, research and reflection on contemporary art. The project had the support of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation and was developed from an initiative that dated back to 2008, promoted by the National Directorate of Culture.
