We arrived at the Dionisio Díaz Children's Play Space, a small square located in a prime location in Colonia del Sacramento, right at the intersection of Dr. Daniel Fosalba Street and Rambla Cristóbal Colón, in front of the coast of the Río de la Plata. History. To understand the meaning of this square, you have to travel back in time to May 1929, in the department of Treinta y Tres. One of the most shocking stories in Uruguayan collective memory occurred there. During a tragic domestic episode in the rural area of ​​Arroyo de Oro, a nine-year-old boy named Dionisio Díaz was seriously injured while trying to protect his little sister, Marina, who was only a few months old. Despite the severity of his injuries, Dionisio carried the baby in his arms and walked more than seven kilometers in the middle of the rural night until he reached the town of Mendizábal (today the town of Vergara) to deliver his sister safe and sound to the authorities. The boy died shortly after completing his feat. His gesture of brotherly love made him an archetype of bravery for the country.
