Spanish Space

We're here! In front of us we have the Spanish Space, a truly special corner within Colonia del Sacramento. If you look closely at the architecture of this main building, you will notice a fascinating detail: we are standing in front of what is known as the House of Don Juan de Águila, an original Portuguese structure that dates back to 1720. It is a wonderful testimony of how the city changed hands and mixed the influences of the two great colonial powers of the time. A journey through its history. Although the walls that surround us have more than three centuries of history, the life of this place as a cultural space began a little further back in time: 1976: It is formally inaugurated as a museum to house Spanish heritage and culture. 1992: The adjacent building, an elegant neoclassical style construction dating from 1840, is integrated, significantly expanding its space. 2022: After being closed for eight years for extensive building restoration works, it reopens its doors completely renovated to welcome us. Its present and importance. Today, the place depends directly on the Municipality of Colonia and is part of the city's museum circuit. Its collection invites us to take a direct trip to the roots and identities that crossed the Atlantic Ocean: it exhibits everything from fine ceramics from Castilla, Zamora and Galicia, to royal costumes…
