Indigenous Space

Here we are in front of the Indigenous Space, one of the most fascinating corners to understand the deep memory of Colonia del Sacramento. To understand this site, it is worth traveling back thousands of years, long before the walls, the cobblestones and the disputed arrival of the Portuguese and Spanish. The entire coastal strip of this region was originally inhabited by different hunting, gathering and fishing societies. These human groups, recognized as the original settlers of the area, left indelible marks on the landscape, adapting to the environment of the Río de la Plata and taking advantage of its resources to survive. With the arrival of European colonizers in the 17th century, their ways of life were drastically transformed, marking the beginning of a complex process of coexistence, tension and assimilation. Today, this museum proposes a route that seeks to rescue that historical dimension often relegated. In its room you will find a careful exhibition of material remains found in archaeological sites in the department of Colonia. The exhibition brings together lithic pieces, mortars, boleadoras and ceramic fragments that allow us to reconstruct the daily life, hunting tools and craft techniques of those first inhabitants.
