Telegraph Space

Here we are! We arrive at the Espacio del Telégrafo, one of the most recent additions to the museum circuit of Colonia del Sacramento. We are located on Calle Del Colegio 53, in the Historic District, a corner that protects a fundamental part of the regional technological memory. I tell you. During the second half of the 19th century, the invention of the electric telegraph completely transformed global communication. In this process, Colonia was not a simple spectator, but a key protagonist in the Río de la Plata. In 1866, the River Plate Company installed the head of the first international submarine cable in the region here, which crossed the river to connect Colonia del Sacramento with Punta Lara, in Argentina. For the first time in history, both shores were able to communicate immediately, shortening distances that previously took days of traveling by boat. Later, in 1874, the Western Telegraph acquired the operation, consolidating the city's strategic importance in the telecommunications network. The museum today. Today, this space pays tribute to that golden era through an extremely careful exhibition. The collection has more than 500 historical pieces collected and donated by Gustavo Coll, collector and radiotelegraphy technician.
