Here we are, in front of the imposing Centenario Stadium, the true temple of world football and a corner full of soul in the heart of Montevideo. A trip to the past: History. Look around and imagine this place almost a century ago. The year was 1930 and Uruguay was preparing to host the first FIFA World Cup in history. The country wanted to go all out to also celebrate the hundred years of its first Constitution. The great challenge? Build this giant in just nine months. Immigrant workers from all over joined forces and, braving torrential rains, achieved the unthinkable. Although the first matches of the tournament had to be played on other fields while the finishing touches were being made, on July 18, 1930, the Centenario opened its doors. That day, Uruguay beat Peru 1 to 0 and, weeks later, the local team was crowned the first world champion by beating Argentina 4 to 2. Uruguay already had 2 world titles won in the 1924 and 1928 Olympic Games, which is why its shirt has 4 stars. The current beat: The Present. Today, the Centenario continues to be the spiritual home of the Uruguayan National Team.
