MAM Agricultural Market

Welcome to the Montevideo Agricultural Market, or as we locals affectionately call it: the MAM! Make yourself comfortable, because you are stepping on a living piece of Uruguayan history, a place where aromas, colors and good vibes intersect every day. A little bit of history Look up and see that impressive iron structure. This building is a relic. Construction began there in 1906 and it was officially inaugurated in 1913. At that time, Montevideo needed a covered and clean place to centralize the sale of fruits and vegetables that arrived from the farms. Before this, merchants gathered outdoors in the old "Plaza de las Carretas", right where our imposing Legislative Palace stands today. For decades, the MAM was the wholesale heart of the city. However, the space became too small and in 1937 the wholesalers moved to the Mercado Modelo. The MAM became a neighborhood retail market and, over the years, the passage of time took its toll and it fell into great disrepair. But the story does not end there: in 2006 the Municipality got to work and, after a spectacular restoration, the market reopened renewed in 2013, completely revitalizing the beautiful Goes neighborhood.
