Monument to the Carreta

We arrive at one of the most emblematic points of Parque Batlle and all of Montevideo: the Monument to the Carreta. History. This impressive sculpture in bronze and pink granite was conceived by renowned Uruguayan sculptor José Belloni. The project formally began after winning a state award in 1919, which led the Uruguayan Government to acquire the work in 1928 to immortalize it in bronze. Since there were no foundries with the required technical capacity in Uruguay, Belloni traveled to Italy with his family to supervise the foundry at the historic Ferdinando Marinelli Artistic Fondage in Florence. After being exhibited in Italy and finally inaugurated in Montevideo on October 14, 1934, the work was declared a National Historical Monument in 1976. Present. Today, the sculpture remains a mandatory stop for those visiting the Uruguayan capital. With an extension of 22 meters and a total weight of 150 tons, the work represents a traditional cart pulled by three teams of oxen, accompanied by two oxen on the back and a gaucho on horseback guiding the team with his cattle prod.
