Andes Museum 1972

Here we are! Welcome to the Andes 1972 Museum. Take a moment to contemplate the façade of this majestic building. We are standing in front of a construction from the second half of the 19th century, with its Corinthian pilasters and Carrara marble balconies. Its walls keep a fascinating secret: they are made with handmade bricks of the time and stones rescued from the old colonial wall of Montevideo, demolished in 1829. This place has belonged to the same family since 1887, when Manuel Bastos, great-grandfather of the current director and founder of the museum, acquired it. But let's move on to the interior, because what guards this space transcends the architecture. History: Memory and Tribute. In 2012, on the 40th anniversary of the famous tragedy and miracle in the Andes mountain range, there was no space in Uruguay dedicated to disseminating the values ​​of this epic. On the initiative of Jörg Thomsen, after a series of traveling exhibitions, this museum officially opened its doors on October 11, 2013. The main objective was not only to tell the incredible feat of survival of the 16 young people who returned, but also to pay a permanent and respectful tribute to the 45 people who traveled on that fateful flight of the Uruguayan Air Force.
