Museum of Art History

Educational museum with a collection made up of high-quality originals and replicas. The script of the permanent exhibition is made up of artistic and cultural elements from Prehistory, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Iran, Greece and Rome, as well as pre-Columbian cultures. Through transitory exhibitions, other cultures represented in its collection are covered: Eastern and Islamic art, Western art from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, American colonial art and ethnographic collections of African and indigenous-American art. The history of the Museum of Art History begins in 1951 with the acquisition - by the Departmental Council of Montevideo - of the first pieces, which 6 years later found an exhibition space in the so-called “Art History Galleries” (on Uruguay Street 1194, next to the current French Embassy). Thus, we could consider the year 1957 as the founding year for this museological Institution. From these first years (the publication that we have left does not specify the year), it is a temporary exhibition: "Pre-Columbian Archeology and Art; the high South American cultures" - in this headquarters on Uruguay Street -, organized by the General Directorate of Culture of the Departmental Council of Montevideo and curated by the archaeologist Raúl Campá Soler.
