We're here! Welcome to the Museum of Migrations, also known by its acronym, MUMI. Take a second to admire the surroundings before entering, because this place is extremely special: not only does it guard memories and life stories, but it is built on the very roots of the city of Montevideo. History: from wall to meeting space To understand where we stand, we have to travel a little in time. The project was born at the initiative of the Municipality of Montevideo and opened its doors in December 2011. However, the most fascinating thing happened during the restoration works between 2008 and 2009. While excavating this historic art deco building from 1930 - designed by engineer Cayetano Carcavallo - archaeologists discovered the largest and best preserved section of the city's old colonial wall: 60 meters of 18th century fortification! Thanks to this treasure, the building integrates the Muralla Abierta Cultural Complex, where historical architecture, archeology and modern heritage coexist in perfect harmony. Present: a living and dynamic museum. Today, the MUMI is a public, free and deeply dynamic museum. With more than 3,500 m² of surface, it does not limit itself to telling the classic story of the Italian or Spanish grandparents who arrived on boats a century ago.
