Carnival Museum, Uruguay

Here we are! Welcome to the Carnival Museum, a truly special corner in the heart of the Old City of Montevideo. If there is a place where Uruguayan popular identity beats strongly throughout the year, it is exactly this. To understand what we are stepping on, we have to do a little memory. This museum opened its doors on November 23, 2006 with a very clear purpose: to protect, celebrate and disseminate the country's great popular festival. Unlike other carnivals in the world, Uruguay's is famous for being the longest on the planet, lasting more than 40 days. Therefore, it was essential to have a physical space that would keep that magic alive when the stage lights go out. The dedication to this work is so outstanding that in 2009 the museum was awarded the prestigious Reina Sofía International Prize for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage. Today, this 3,000 square meter building is a vibrant cultural center that welcomes thousands of visitors each year. In its present, the museum is not limited to being a repository of ancient objects; It is a living space. Through its main rooms, it invites us to immerse ourselves in the fundamental pillars of our party: the murga with its satire and vocal harmony, the candombe with its drums and Afro-descendant roots, and the endearing tablados, those bar stages...
