Origami Museum

Here we are! Welcome to the Origami Museum of Colonia del Sacramento. This space has a very special history: it was inaugurated in January 2020, becoming the first museum in Latin America dedicated entirely to the art of paper folding. It emerged as an initiative to gather and highlight works by contemporary artists from around the world and to disseminate the rich tradition of this discipline. At present, the museum offers a very complete tour. In its rooms you can see everything from the history of folding in the East and West to its most current applications. Although we usually associate origami only with art or entertainment, here you will discover how these techniques are applied in science, robotics, astronautics, and industrial or textile design. In addition to the permanent exhibitions of original pieces, the museum has a video library, holds courses and workshops, and houses the "Gershon Legman" library, which houses some 300 books and historical documents on the subject. Its cultural relevance is such that it has been distinguished with the Uruguayan Country Brand certification. Among its curiosities, it stands out that the library pays tribute to Gershon Legman, considered the first historian of origami.
