Gurvich Museum

Here we are! Welcome to the Gurvich Museum, an essential corner in the Sarandí pedestrian area, in the cradle of the Old City of Montevideo. If you look at the façade and the interior design, you will notice that this space exudes a special warmth. The history of this museum is, to a large extent, the story of a family and collective dream. It was promoted in 2001 by the José Gurvich Foundation, promoted by his wife, Julia Añorga, and his son Martín, to preserve and disseminate the master's work. Although it opened for the first time in 2005 on Ituzaingó Street, it was at the end of 2015 when it reopened in its own headquarters: a historic building recycled by architects Fernando Giordano and Rafael Lorente. As of 2019, the property passed into the hands of the Uruguayan State under the Ministry of Education and Culture, guaranteeing its public preservation, while the foundation continues to guide its spirit. Today, this six-story, approximately 900 square meter building houses a fascinating chronological journey. On the ground floor they are greeted by muralism, and as we go up, we walk step by step with the artist: from his initial training in the emblematic Taller Torres García in the mid-1940s, through his teaching time and his time in Cerro de Montevideo, until reaching his latest works in New York.
