Miter Museum

Here we are, in the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in front of the Miter Museum, located at Calle San Martín 336. You are in front of one of the oldest standing homes in Buenos Aires, a colonial mansion that dates back to the end of 1785, originally built for Marcelino Carranza. This house has a fascinating history. In 1810, the deposed viceroy of the Río de la Plata, Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros, stayed here. But his strongest bond is, without a doubt, with General Bartolomé Miter. He and his family lived in this mansion from 1859 to 1906. Miter rented the house to Benigno Velázquez Ichollet in 1860, and at the end of his presidency in 1868, a commission that raised the funds gave it to him. Imagine the encounters that took place within these walls. On July 9, 1860, Mitre, Justo José de Urquiza and Santiago Derqui met precisely in this house. In addition, it was here that the newspaper La Nación, created by Miter in 1870, began to be published. In 1895, the publication moved to the adjacent building to the north, designed by the engineer Emilio Mitre. The original structure of the house was that of a classic colonial residence, with a horizontal development along three patios and rooms with galleries on the sides.
