Naval Museum
Here we are, in the heart of the Pocitos neighborhood, in Montevideo, ready to delve into the rich maritime history of Uruguay. We are in the surroundings of the Naval Museum, an institution that depends directly on the National Navy of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay. This museum was created on March 26, 1981, at the initiative of the National Navy itself, with a clear and fundamental objective: to acquire, preserve, study, exhibit and disseminate the valuable naval and maritime heritage of the country. It is a place where the past comes to life and allows us to understand Uruguay's deep connection with the sea. The Naval Museum's collection is organized into four main rooms, each one designed to take you through different moments in Uruguayan maritime history. As you explore them, you will travel from the first exploration routes, which marked the beginning of the European presence on these coasts, to key periods such as the colonial period, the Artiguist period, the independence period and the militarist period. Each room is a window to a different era, showing you how the sea has influenced the formation and development of the nation. Among the objects that attract the most attention, you will see historical torpedoes, anchors and cannons, silent witnesses of battles and voyages.
