Numismatic Museum

Here we are! We arrived at the mezzanine of the Headquarters of the Central Bank of Uruguay, a very special corner in the heart of the Old City of Montevideo where the Numismatic Museum is housed. A journey through the history of our currency To understand the origin of this space, we must remember that the history of currency in Uruguay closely accompanies the institutional and economic development of the country. During the first years of independent life and throughout the 19th century, monetary circulation was complex: noble metal coins coexisted with banknotes issued by various private banks of the time. With the creation of the Bank of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay and, later, in the second half of the 20th century, with the founding of the Central Bank of Uruguay as the governing body of the financial system, the need arose to preserve and disseminate this heritage. This is how this museum was born, conceived to gather, classify and exhibit the graphic and metallic memory of national money.
