Plaza Fabini

Here we are in Plaza Fabini, one of the most dynamic and iconic corners of the Center of Montevideo. Although its official name pays tribute to the Uruguayan financier and politician Juan Pedro Fabini, in the city almost everyone knows it simply as Plaza del Entrevero, a popular name motivated by the imposing central sculpture that immediately captures attention. To understand its history we must go to the middle of the 20th century. After the projection of Avenida del Libertador, urban planners debated how to resolve the oblique layout where it joins the traditional Avenida 18 de Julio. The definitive project, designed by architect Emilio Massobrio, was inaugurated in 1964. Its design broke with the rigid scheme of the traditional colonial plaza and incorporated curved paths and concentric pavements to accompany the pedestrian route, taking care to keep the visual perspective towards the Legislative Palace clear. Decades later, in 1994, the space was restructured through an intervention by architect Juan Perazzo. In the present, the plaza is a living space where the daily rhythm of the Montevideo center pauses. Surrounded by Río Negro and Julio Herrera y Obes streets, its walls, fountains and garden areas combine public trees with stylized palm trees.
