Plaza Varela, Montevideo

Here we are! I welcome you to Plaza José Pedro Varela, where we are welcomed by this magnificent sculptural group dedicated to one of the most transcendent figures in Uruguayan history. To understand the value of this corner, we must travel back in time to the second half of the 19th century. José Pedro Varela was the great reformer of public education in Uruguay. Thanks to his impetus, primary education became a free, mandatory and secular right for all children in the country. The monument you see did not rise overnight. Its construction was approved by law in 1909 thanks to a popular subscription supported by the State and the Municipality of Montevideo. After entrusting the work to the talented Spanish sculptor Miguel Blay, the complex was finally inaugurated on December 14, 1918, under the presidency of Dr. Feliciano Viera. Today, this site is part of Montevideo's downtown heritage and is officially cataloged as a National Historical Monument. The square functions as a meeting and pause point for residents, strategically located on Bulevar Artigas Avenue, between Avenida Brasil and Canelones Street, connecting busy areas of the city.
