Sala Zitarrosa

Montevideo, Uruguay

Here we are in front of the Sala Zitarrosa, one of the most significant cultural and musical spaces in the center of Montevideo, located in the historic Rex Building on the central Avenida 18 de Julio. History The building was designed by architect Alfredo Jones Brown and inaugurated in 1928. The Cine Rex Theater began operating on its ground floor, managed by Max Glücksmann's company, a company that managed other prominent movie theaters in the city such as the Trocadero and the Gran Splendid. For several decades, the cinema was a regular part of the main avenue's entertainment circuit. Towards the 1980s the hall ceased its commercial functions, at which time it was acquired by the Municipality of Montevideo with the aim of recovering it for the city and transforming it into a publicly managed performance hall. Present After a recycling and conditioning project led by architect Conrado Pintos and the direction of architect Eneida de León, the space reopened its doors on November 3, 1999 under the name Sala Zitarrosa, in homage to the figure of the musician and poet Alfredo Zitarrosa. It currently functions as an artistic center and concert hall dependent on the capital commune. It has a capacity of 531 seats (391 seats in the stalls and 140 in the gathering), equipped with acoustic and lighting technology…
