Here we are! Welcome to the Portuguese House, one of the most genuine and fascinating corners of Colonia del Sacramento. If you look closely at the façade and the surroundings, you will realize that it is not simply an old building: it is a true time capsule that takes us directly to the 18th century. A look at its history. To understand this space, you have to travel to the beginnings of the city. The first documented reference to this construction appears in the plans of 1732. At that time of constant imperial disputes between Spain and Portugal for control of the Río de la Plata, the house was built following traditional Lusitanian architectural techniques: wide stone walls set in clay and a gable roof covered with tiles. Although time passed and the town went through countless transformations, the structure managed to remain standing. Today it preserves its stone walls and part of the historical ground that you are walking on in a totally original way. Its present as a museum. Currently, this building functions as a museum space within the Cologne Museum network. Instead of displaying large gala objects, its interior houses a collection dedicated to the daily life and folklore traditions of the Portuguese provinces of Trás-os-Montes, Minho and Alentejo.
